About The HSC
The primary role of the Health Standards Committee (H.S.C.) and its officers (HSO’s) is to educate the B.K.K.S. Membership in matters relating to fish health, so that they can handle their own problems, emphasising prevention rather than cure. These officers have many years of experience, have attended various fish related Seminars and have attained an Advance Diploma on Water Quality and Fish Health from OATA ( the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association).
The H.S.C. is now the authority responsible for all health matters, including water quality relating to B.K.K.S. Shows. H.S.C. Officers now attend all B.K.K.S. Shows from benching to de-benching to offer advice to the Show Chairman should it be required, these officers will generally be available to answer fish health questions from the membership and general public.
With the advent of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the Committee has put together a set of guide lines and advice which generally covers water quality and filtration, water chemistry, osmoregulation and fish health and transportation of fish to shows etc.
At present the HSC has 9 full HSO’s, 1 probationary HSO and 2 trainee HSO’s
Good water quality is of the utmost importance, as 90% of fish health problems stem from poor water quality.
