Cuttlebrook Koi Farm

2007 BKKS Auction at Cuttlebrook Koi Farm

Mark Chetter - Cuttlebrook KoiIn 2007 Cuttlebrook Koi Farm in Oxfordshire very kindly held an auction of their superb English bred Koi for the benefit of the British Koi Keepers Society.

The auction was held on the 7th April and was for members of the Society.  Membership Secretary, Steve Watson, was on hand to recruit anyone who was not a member of the Society or renew a membership so they could bid.  Although the attendance was quite small the atmosphere was none the less electrifying!!  Especially gratifying was the attendance of Cliff Neale and John Helens, both past winners of the Grand Champion award at our National Show.

There were over 50 lots available and could be viewed prior to the auction starting and there was also the opportunity of having a look at the other Koi that Mark and Lisa had bred.  Something not to be missed!

As the fish were floated in baskets up and down the water channel that had been constructed for the auction, it soon became obvious that there were bargains to be had.  This was emphasised when husband and wife, Mark & Sue Chetter, began bidding against each other!

The quality of Cuttlebrook Koi is improving year on year and the list of prize winners at shows, including the BKKS National, is growing steadily and impressively!  As you will see from the Harvest pictures from 2007 they have some stunning Koi on the farm.

So what happened in 2008………

2008 saw another invitation to Cuttlebrook Koi Farm for an auction for the benefit of the British Koi Keepers Society on Sunday 27th April.  A bright sunny day, if not a bit cold, heralded some quite fierce bidding at times.  Once again Mark Davis was the auctioneer and it was difficult at times keeping up with the bidding due to the banter between each other.  On hand to supply the drinks and bacon and sausage rolls were the Cuttlebrook Crew.

As this was, once again, an auction for Society members, the General Secretary was on hand to deal with anyone who wanted to join or renew their membership.

As the auction progressed it was obvious that there were one or two very shrewd bidders in the crowd and some great bargains were had.  One lot in particular, a Kindai Showa, had taken the fancy of a few bidders.  As it was floated up and down in the basket Gary Hood was in competition with fellow member Bob Hart’s daughter Daisy to secure the Koi.  What Gary didn’t realise was that Daisy had pulled out and the Society General Secretary was bidding and she wanted that fish!  The look on Gary’s face when he realised who he was bidding against was classic.  So who won the auction for the Showa, well if I say it is now residing in the General Secretary’s pond you have your answer.

A lot of very happy people went home that day with some fantastic bargains and Council would like to thank Mark and Lisa for their support of the Society.  It’s not easy being a Koi farmer, the hours are long and the pay is terrible but the look in Mark Davis’s eyes when he sees his beloved Koi coming out of the mud ponds says it all.
