Kennet Valley Closed Show

Grand Champion - Photo by Darren Maughan at A4KoiKennet Valley Koi Club held its 2nd show at Hare Hatch Sheeplands Garden Centre in Twyford on Sunday 6th September and the club is very grateful for the support that is received from the garden centre and its staff.

As with all shows the week before it when everything comes together and this year Dave Grove was in charge of setting up the show.  Dave did a great job, which was his first foray into this arena and I am sure this will not be his last year in charge!  The HSC representatives for our show were Lin Murray, David Williamson (both Kennet Valley members), George Badenoch (Probationery HSC) and John Botha who helped with de-bagging of the koi.  Benching was started bright and early on Sunday morning by Geoff Kemp (Connoisseur Koi) and was completed quite quickly.  That just left me to complete the paperwork so that the judges could get started on judging.   This is always a nerve racking time for all the exhibitors and the judges don’t give anything away.  This year’s judges were Society President, Gary Pritchard, Alan Coogan and Heather Payne and I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Section, to thank them for a job well done.

All our visitors were given a ticket for the tombola stall as part of their entry charge and there were lots of goodies to be had, koi food was also on sale at reasonable prices and plenty of our visitors and members took advantage of these prices.  It has to be said that we, are in comparative terms, a small show but the enthusiasm of the members out weights this and we had a great show.  There was always someone ready to speak to our visitors, whether it was to invite them to one of our meetings or to point out the attributes of the superb koi on display.

Judging completed I had the task of collating all the results which were duly displayed for all to see.  Shock of all shocks!............. I had won Grand Champion!

The judges were given fruit bowls as a thank you gift and the major awards were presented.  Thanks go to all the club members who helped to put the show on and also break down on Monday.  Here’s to the next show in 2010!
