'kin showa

Just a quick update on how the fry are doing, for anyone who might be remotely interested. We've only seen the largest one in the last week, though the combination of turning the skimmer off to aid survivability and a UV bulb blowing has created an ideal growth environment for it by turning the water bright green. With our Photo show in 3 weeks clearing this up is now becoming a major priority!

Bio Security at the 2006 National Show

The BKKS would like to state that full bio security measures were in force at the National to prevent as far as humanly possible the spread of KHV or other fish diseases.

These included:

1. The sterilisation of all vats before use. Splash guards between all vats.

2. Separate nets and water test samplers for each vat.

3. Sterilisation by Virasure of all bowls and other equipment, plus the arms of anybody handling fish after being used in each vat.

4. Virasure foot baths and hand cleansers at the entries to the ring.

5. Notices asking the public not to touch any vat.

EU Regulations for transporting Koi

TRANSPORT OF ANIMALS (KOI)

I have just finished going through the EU regulations regarding transporting koi and the proposed amendments by the UK government to this law.

The good news is that there will be no changes for koi keepers. Other hobbys will suffer, some in a big way. The long and the short of it is the term "ecconomic gain" As we do not sell or win cash prizes, Koi shows are exempt.

There are general welfare conditions which are.

1. Animal is fit to travel

2. Keeping journeys times to a minimum

Guidelines for Tranpsorting Koi to Shows

The following PDF Document contains the current guidelines for safely tranpsorting Koi to shows.

You now have a legal requirement to care for your livestock under transit and this document should assist you in meeting these rules.

Essex Section Show 2006 results

I was fortunate enough to be able to visit the Essex Section show and can report on the 4 fish that took top honours on the day.

While all these fish are glorious, the baby champion just pips it for me, it's proud owner should be capable of big things to come though. Winner of the day must surely go to the Adult champion though, a lovely Showa with beautiful balanced pattern that also won Best Beginner. Congratulations one and all and a big thanks to all the welcoming faces at the Essex show!
