finding our way around the new site

Well this is our first real day navigating the new website, after a few false starts we finally cracked some of the site but it may take a day or three to really get used to things.

My 51st Birthday came and went but the best present came from Val in the form of Ducan Griffiths Step by Step Advanced Koi Diagnosis & Treatments (thanx Manky Sanke aka Syd) for your assistance in the purchasing of it for Val.

We had the section Auction at the Meeting last Wednesday would you believe we could have bought the same book at the auction lol in the end we settled for a Disolved solids meter, a tub of shingoi triple mix and a bottle of Kusuri Masuizai fish anaesthetic and all for £16.50.

The Plymouth and District show looks as though it is going to be held on the 20/7/08 at the Tamar View Garden center at Carkeel just outside of Saltash Cornwallbut will be posting more as things come through the grapevine.

Now all we have to do is plod along on the new site wih all our usual non IT skills until we have cracked things lol

Navigation will get easier...

as more and more things are added. In particular, the Taxonomy system (Keywords) will allow for the easier jumping between posts of different types; plus this site allows highlighting of articles in lists - for example the Section details will always be shown in any list relating to that section. This should increase usability.

The site also allows collections of articles ("collections" or "books") with their own in-built heirarchical navigation - see the BKKS details. These can be read page by page or jumped around in (even from keywords); and pages can be moved into and out of them at any time. So, for example, if a forum post becomes the definitive guide to filtration this can be moved into a book on how to build a koi pond.

The content structure of the site is also a lot more flexible, as ANY article on the site, such as this, can be commented on, and appear in the relevant lists of information - hopefully allowing information from a lot more people to be rapidly available; and allow the mixing of fact with opinion and experience which hopefully create a much broader perspective to be maintained.

I've also chosen a much simpler editor for this site compared to the one that was present before. This is also consistent across most sections of the site and should people become much more familiar with it. More functions will be added to the editor later; such as quoting articles and smilies; as I find the time.

I know the headline navigation is not there yet but it will be once I migrate over something to navigate around in!
